Memleben. Situated between Weimar and Sangershausen, nowadays the city is hard to find on a map. In the 10th Century, however, Memleben was (almost) one of the most important cities with its monastery and Kaiserpfalz. King Heinrich I died here in 936 as well as Kaiser Otto I in 973. Nowadays, remains of both the church from the 10th Century and the monastery from the first part of the 13th Century with its extant crypts are still to be seen here. Another highlight is the medieval cloister garden.
The monastic buildings now house a permanent exhibition relating to the history of the abbey and the town. The exhibition presents the building history of the monastery, the exertion of governance from different locations and the daily routine of the monks in a Benedictine abbey. A post positioned medieval scriptorium provides an insight to the Ottonian bookmarking and illumination. As the museum´s educational area facilitates school classes, families and other groups immersion into the lively monastery and allows them to experience history, they will be able to get an idea of the life in a medieval abbey.
